Educational Survey: Bullying and Academic Performance

Educational Survey: Bullying and Academic Performance

Introduction

It is greatly important to explore the relationship of bullying and academic performance using survey methodology. Fraenkel & Wallen(2005) stated that the major purpose of surveys is to describe the characteristics of a population. There are two types of survey that includes the cross sectional  survey and longitudinal survey. In the real world cross sectional survey gathers information from a sample that has been collected from a predetermine population.  While longitudinal survey focuses its method of information collection on different location over a period of time.

Causes of Bullying

Bullying has been a social menace and that occurs in many places that includes school, hospital and workplace. Olweus (1993) stated that bullying is broadly defined as a class of international and repeated acts that occur through physical, verbal and relational forms in situations where a power difference is present. Bullying of student can be a kind of using abusive language that is demeaning and that can lead to lost of personal confidence and that will adversely affect the student academic performance.

Bullying is very common among student in a tender age and some of student believes that is kind of fun and they derive joy from a mocking other student. Bullying is a barbaric and cowardly act against innocent student. Alikasifoglu (2007) that bullying is a worldwide problem which reaches its highest rate in elementary school age and declines in adolescence and later. The act of bullying tend to disappear as the student get older and it is rarely occur among senior level college student because they are more determined to face future challenges. The intimidating way to send bitter message to fellow student is bullying and it is the responsibility of the parent and teachers to ensure student behave in way that is acceptable to the society because they are the leaders of tomorrow.

The Impact of Bullying and Student Performance

Researchers  believes that there is a correlation between bullying and poor performance of student. There is an existence of negative correlation between bullying and student academic performance. A simple e-mail survey could give executives the key to understanding why they cannot keep an employee  happy, according to the In-Touch survey system.(Landriault,2000).If a student is happy and free from bullying they will be a tendency to focus on his or her study.

It is great a fact that negative comments is harmful to student performance and emotional well-being. A student that receives word of encouragement from teachers and parents will always do better in any school activities.  The long time impact of bullying on student is detrimental to their study and level of concentration in the class. The adverse effect of bullying may leads to depression and possible suicide and that is the reason parent and teachers has the moral obligation to stop bullying.

Process of Survey Techniques

There are two major task for researchers needs to undertake before embarking on survey process that includes defining the survey question and identifying the specific population. Researchers must have necessary skills to develop closed-ended questions and open-ended questions in order to really investigate the impact of bullying on student academic performance. There different method of survey and data collection that includes direct administration, mail survey, telephone surveys and personal interview. Unlike face to face interview, questionnaires filled in by patients, do not provide the opportunity to clarify meaning of question and answers, important emotional and non-verbal responses cannot be observed and relevant information may be lost.(Harvey et al,2010). There is a constraint facing data collection using survey techniques and sometimes questionnaire does not really gives researchers to get full of the subject matter.

Conclusion

This paper has given me the opportunity to investigate the impact of bullying in student academic performance. The causes of bullying  has been fully discussed in this paper. Survey methodology has been greatly implemented to explore the causes of bullying and the impacts of bullying on student self confidence.
