The Impact of Historical Research on Corporate Performance
Historical
Research: The impact on organization and education performance in new era
Introduction
This paper technically investigates the
relationship of historical research and the impacts on an organization and
education performance in new era. It further discusses the methodology of
historical research, reasons for historical research and case studies relating
to historical research are examined.
Methodology
of historical research
Historical research has been a
long time technique that helps researchers to develop correlation between the
past and the present. Fracken & Wallen (2009) recognizes that there is, of
course, no manipulation or control of variables like there is in experimental
research, but more particularly, it is unique in that it focuses primarily on
the past. Studying the events of the past has greatly helped researchers to
have different perspective in validating data.
The methodology of historical research
involves different steps that include defining the research question, locating
relevant sources and understanding of primary sources and secondary sources.
Developing an efficient
research question will help researchers to have sense of direction and also to
generate information from their participants.
Locating relevant
sources will help researchers to access valuable information from different
sources that include annual report, books, academic journals and numerical or
accounting records.
It is greatly necessary
for a researcher to understand the primary sources from secondary sources for
the purpose of academic study. Brass (2011) states that it was not always a
straightforward analytical process, especially with older publication, because
secondary education and empirical research are historical constructs that have
been defined and used in discontinuous ways throughout history. It is a
cumbersome process utilizing the past history to perform historical research.
Reasons
for historical research
The
implementation of historical research has widely spread around all industries
that include education, technology, defence, manufacturing, retail and health
care. Verdis (2003) Recognizes that for the past three decades, the educational
community has witnessed the development of a very influential research movement
that brought together researchers and practitioners from a wide spectrum of
academic fields such as statistics, education evaluation, subject didactics
and educational policy.
Organizations around the world
have implemented historical research to investigate sales pattern of their
products and how customers view their company in the past to the present.
Historical research
also enables researchers to understand the teaching practice in the past and
how it is applicable to present educational system.
Major organization such as Microsoft
Inc understands the importance of historical research and they were able to
learn from past failure and that has greatly helped Microsoft to be a leader in
the Information Technology industry. The release of Window millennium and
Window Vista was a total failure and Microsoft quickly regurgitated by
launching a new operating system known as Window Xp and that has led the
organization to improve on the past product through innovation and historical
research and they were able to launch Window 7 and 8.
Every organization
around the world has the moral and ethical responsibility to learn from the
past mistakes.
Case studies on Historical research
The evolution technological
devices has changed the way education has been delivered to teenagers and that
has both positive and negative impacts on the learning development. The
historical stage is the initial stage in which there is one predominant way of
interacting (Lambert, 2007). The historical research has been a benchmark for
organizational performance. RIM is the maker of Blackberry phone and tablet.
Some years back, they launched playbook tablet and that was a total failure and
economic loss but the major problem with RIM is that they suppose to learn from historical research by
evaluating the product performance in the market with other company producing
electronic tablet and that will help RIM to improve on the Playbook instead RIM
discontinued the production of Playbook.
Blackberry Playbook should have been the best
tablet and that will help Blackberry user
to interface their Blackberry user
phone with playbook. Luft (1997) stated that historical research has the
potential to make contribution to the understanding of present-day practice which
the analysis of present-day data (or cannot so easily make).
There is a great correlation between historical research and product
innovation. Apple has greatly implemented historical research to their
advantage and there is a great product development and product migration from
music Ipod to Iphone and to Ipad Tablet.
Conclusion
This paper has investigated the historical
research on the impacts on organization
and education performance and it has help researchers and organization to learn
from their past success and failure. This paper further explained the
methodology of historical research and techniques to conduct historical
research in both small and big scales.
